‘KURA NEZA’ RE-INTEGRATION PROGRAMME
DURATION: September 2023 - Now
FUNDING: Humanity First
PARTNERS: Shine Again Initiative
WHY: Many children in Gahanga have either dropped out, or never been, to school, because their families lack the basic resources to provide for them.
OVERVIEW: The Kura Neza Programme supports young cricketers back into school, providing the materials (uniforms, books, etc.) and fees that they need. Our Ambassador Teachers in school help them to settle in and oversee their academic progress. Meanwhile our weekly and holiday cricket sessions support their literacy and help develop confidence and networks of friends.
We know that to have lasting impact, we must also help their parents to be able to provide for their education, long term. Because of this, we are now working to support them towards economic empowerment.
"We couldn't study because of our problems... but after joining the programme, everything changed. I started studying properly and got good grades, and even learned English at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium. I've made many friends through that cricket community, and my dream is to become either a doctor or a mechanical engineer."
