Gahanga Cricket Stadium opened in October 2017 and has been dubbed the ‘Lord’s of East Africa.’ In 2023, an additional oval was added, meaning that the not-for-profit ground consists of two ICC international standard ovals, a pavilion and bar, as well as community facilities like a smart classroom
. It has won and been nominated for several prestigious architecture and engineering awards. The three vaults, designed to mimic the trajectory of a bouncing ball, as well as Rwanda’s rolling hills, were constructed out of 66,000 tiles made primarily from local earth excavated on site. The tiles were each handmade, predominantly using local labour sourced through a Rwandan Government-led social protection programme, the Vision Umurenge Project, aimed at the two categories of the population with the greatest potential vulnerability.
As well as providing a home for grassroots cricket and adult leagues, the stadium has hosted more international T20 games than any other venue in the world*.
Having run it in partnership since the opening, in 2026 CBH handed over full responsibility for the management of the grounds to the Rwanda Cricket Association, making it a truly local asset.
